Tell Us About Yourself?

Tell Us About Yourself?

I'm Rachel, a fine art photographer based in the UK. I will be turning 60 at the end of this month. I live in London and have 3 boys who are young adults.

I grew up in France and fell in love with photography from a young age. I was an inquisitive child and loved rummaging through a shoebox full of black-and-white photographs of my grandmothers. All these people were standing in front of the camera in their Sunday frocks. I was trying to find clues about my family history in these images.

I got my first camera when I was young and continued to play with photography sluggishly; I didn’t want to learn about the technology; I just wanted to take photos. The results were dire. I only considered embracing photography as a profession once I realized that all I was talking about was photography! I had to give it a try.

I returned to university at 45 for a Master’s in Fine Art Photography. That challenged my worldview and conception of photography. I had to learn too much about photography techniques, but I also discovered that I loved photographing people, even if my first portrait was a disaster!

My first big project for my MA was to write about and photograph women who volunteered during World War Two. I continued this project after finishing uni and traveling across the UK to meet these women in their 90s who often didn’t understand why I wanted to photograph them.

A few years later, I worked on another project called Women Who Reinvented Their Selves After 50 as a role model and celebrate everything that happens after 50!

As a photographer, I specialize in portrait and boudoir photography to help women find ways to embrace who they are. My motto is “Help You Find Your Voice, ” leading me to my third photography project, the Women in Quiet Rebellion, which I started in 2020. This project came about from my desire to create more conceptual work sharing a message that resonates with me and using photography as a way of expression rather than just documenting

Tell us about your art.

My art is something new. It took me a long time to call myself an artist. Through my photography practice, I have evolved and realized that art would help me express my voice. I have always struggled with words. I’m an introvert and hate small talk, but things open up when I use photography as an artistic expression.

I have a few ongoing projects that are polarised around the same themes. Finding your voice, being yourself, embracing who you are with not a care in the world. Through my artwork, I want to help women get out of their shells, encourage them to use their voices and celebrate who they are.

My first fine art project is called the Women in Quiet Rebellion. It was triggered by attending an exhibition at the National Gallery in London about the work of Artemisia Gentileschi, one of my favorite painters. I was fascinated by the resilience of Artemisia, who had to find her way as a woman and a painter at the time of the Renaissance in Italy. I wanted to start a photography project on how women hardly had a voice during the Renaissance; they were supposed to be seen but not heard. I have evolved this project across to Edwardian times, and I plan to continue until women are finally allowed a voice.

Another evolving project I’m working on is the joyful journey, where women celebrate starting a new across a European city. All these projects make me feel elated as I align entirely with my voice and message when creating these images.

I grew up in the 1970s and felt the difference in opportunity between men and women. From a young age, I had this urge to fight for my rights, helping women find their way and rights. All my work has a strong feminist message.

What can you tell us about love?

Love is a compelling feeling. It transforms you into a superhuman; we can achieve anything beyond beliefs with Love. It’s the most beautiful feeling in the world.

Where do you get your inspiration?

I’m a rebel and love women who were trailblazers and braved conventions. I grew up in the 1970s and felt the difference in opportunity between men and women. From a young age, I had this urge to fight for my rights, helping women find their way and rights—all my work has a strong feminist message.

I love women artists like Artemisia, Camille Claudel, Frida Khalo, Sally Mann, and more. I love how their art expresses themselves. I love Baroque and Renaissance styles—a mix of feminine and boldness.

I love wandering Museums to find inspiration. Films also inspire me; I love the movie In the Mood For Love, where every scene is about sensuality and a beautiful photograph. From a young age, I had this urge to fight for my rights, helping women find their way and rights—all my work as a strong feminist.

Favorite music?

I love jazz, piano music, and a good dose of Funk music for the good feel vibe.

Something No One Knows About You?

Most people don’t know I speak Alsatian, a dialect from Alsace that is similar to Swiss German. I get minimal opportunity to say it, but my ears always prick when I hear some Swiss Germans touring in London. I’m French, but I have a solid Germanic culture. Your neighbor will significantly influence you when you grow up near a border!

What advice would you give your younger self?

Trust yourself; go for it! I have lost so much time because I was a people pleaser who wanted to fit in a box and not believe in myself. Self-confidence and worthiness will take you anywhere!
