Hello
My New Year’s resolutions are never about special diets, exercising more, or working less. For as long as I can remember, they have been about emotions and spiritual goals. I write down what I need in a new year and then release those resolutions too, just to keep myself from frantically reaching my goals.
I think the uncertainty of the pandemic has shown how important it is to make sure you take good care of yourself, both physically and mentally. Writing is a natural medicine; it is like a homeopathic remedy derived from life’s stuff– your personal experience. I find it helpful to write about my feelings, especially regarding uncertainties about life, like the pandemic. My grandmother always told me, “you can’t look after everyone if you can’t look after yourself.” This is especially true throughout the pandemic, as we can become very focused on our loved ones and not ourselves and become burnt out. Making time for me is high on my new year’s resolutions list for 2022.
During the pandemic, the little things in life became big, right? Every day things like not being able to leave the house or go to a park with our children, popping over to friends for a coffee. So, another resolution is to appreciate the little things even more next year, and I realize they were actually the big things when they were taken away again. Next year, I will be making an effort to embrace the important things in life. Not just friends and family, but nature, closeness, love, understanding and compassion, too.
Another resolution that I started a long time ago and will be on my list again for 2022 is to be honest about how I feel. I will also encourage other people around me to be honest about how they feel. Real strength lies only in the truth.
Tomorrow is promised to no-one. Letting go of a year doesn’t mean we don’t learn from what happened to us in the previous year. Never forget the events of the past two years. Because, if they’ve taught us anything, it’s this: you never know what tomorrow brings or takes away. I always think I have time to do the things I want to do – go on a memorable holiday, learn how to do something new, start painting. I don’t know what lies ahead, so one resolution for the new year is to make the most of the time I have now and make the most of every day without putting things off.
