An asset to the Netherlands, or to the whole world, the first green department store full of beautiful brands and an even more beautiful mission.
Yesterday TOMO (is the abbreviation of tomorrow) opened its doors to the press, and I was invited to admire the store for the first time while enjoying a beautifully organized organic dinner.
A new department store with a mission
As the world’s first green department store, TOMO shows how you can inextricably connect stylish fashion, beauty & lifestyle with sustainability TOMO has a social, sustainable mission and is moving towards circularity.
Founder Marjan Haselhoff told us during her passionate speech how the concept of a sustainable department store came about three years ago, just before the outbreak of Corona. Born from her own need and a lack, she came up with TOMO. Because why didn’t a green department store already exist?

What particularly appeals to me about her story is the drive behind the idea. The woman and the mission. Marjam is an inspiring lady who set up this company at a later point in her life. With a completely different background and therefore no experience in the retail industry, which she says only had advantages because the automatic pitfalls were not a threat, TOMO is a new beginning.
Marjam: “I missed a sustainable department store? Why wasn’t there a place where I could find everything related to sustainability under one roof? But stylish and not so dusty and old-fashioned? I decided to create such a place myself.”
5248 honest stories under one roof.
Their mission is also reflected in the shop design. Here too, beauty is the benchmark. 95% of what you see in the shop interior is sustainable or circular. Residual materials formed the basis for the interior. For example, eggshells and fish scales formed the basis of the interior.
Transparency
Transparency makes the fashion, beauty, and lifestyle industries more sustainable. TOMO believes customers deserve to know where products come from and under what conditions they were produced. By being open about the origin and production of products, TOMO helps us to make more conscious choices. They also aim to motivate brands to stay their course towards total circularity.
TOMO is home to large established brands and small emerging brands. They believe it is essential to support and grow small businesses so that they can contribute today to the beautiful world of tomorrow.
Every product from every brand tells a hopeful story of sustainability and circularity.
TOMO’s are open and transparent about production processes and areas for improvement; to you and the other brands. This is how they encourage each other to become even better.
