Tell Us About Yourself?
I am Els Dekkers, I am married, and I have three children. I am also a grandmother to four beautiful grandchildren. I went to art school when I was young, and I became a window dresser. I was asked to be a model, but I didn’t choose that path of life. I’ve always regretted that choice. But do not worry, I’ll get there. It is still a big wish of mine, and look where I am right now.
Tell us about your view on aging?
I have mixed feelings about aging. On one hand, it is lovely to be able to spend your day quietly without having to do so much anymore. On the other hand, I often feel very alone. It’s hard at times to never receive a compliment or have a good conversation that allows you to broaden your horizons.
What’s the best and worst part of getting older for you?
The best thing is that you have been through so much. I am no longer easily upset by setbacks. The worst thing about aging is by far the loss of family and friends.
Any regrets in life?
No, now that I think about it, no regrets at all.
Best new discovery?
I believe that the world is open to me. There is still a lot possible, also at my age.
What Keeps You Up At Night?
At night my whole life goes by in my head. Maybe because I have a lot to process.
If you could write a letter to your younger self, what would you write?
I would like to compliment myself, how I have dragged myself and the family through so many setbacks.
How do you stay healthy? Both physically and mentally?
I eat pretty healthily, walk about 5 km every day, like to garden and go shopping by bike.
What is the first thing you do in the morning to start your day in a positive way?
I puzzle every day. I read the newspaper, especially the positive parts. When I’m sad, I put on music and dance.
What is your age, and how old do you feel?
I am 76 years old, and I feel 60. Sometimes the time I live in now is not relatively easy for me. It feels somewhat unknown. I do know how I felt in the world when I was 60.
